He purchesed land in 1703 in Middletown Township,Bucks County,Pensnylvania....... ---- Was a Quaker listed in the Minutes of Middletown Monthly Meeting Records ************ The mother of Nelson Jolly, Sr., was Letitia Nelson, whose ancestors also immigrated to America from Londonderry and settled in thearea along the Delaware River. She was the daughter of a Scotch-Irish Quaker,Henry Nelson, and his second wife, Alice Wildman, whom he married on the 23rd day, 10th month, 1719 at the Middletown Monthly Meeting of Friends (Quakers). His first marriage, which took place 16th d., 12th mo.1708 was to Alice Hayhurst, who was buried on the 4th d., 7th mo .,1714. There were two daughters of this marriage,Mary born 6th, 9th,1709, buried 11th, 9th, 1711; and Alice, born 31st, 6th, 1713, married John Carter. ------- By his marriage to Alice Wildman, Henry Nelson was the fatherof four children: Ann, b. 8th, 6th, 1720 married Anthony Wilson; Letitia,b. 12th 19th, 1721, married Samuel Jolly; Jemima, b. 1st, 23rd, 1723/24 married ................ Heaton; and Thomas, b. 4th, 27th, 1726 dated 1753. --- Records of Middletown,Bucks County,Pennsylvania ----- The first record found on Henry Nelson is of his purchase in1703 of land in Bucks County. He sold this land after a short period and bought 114 actes from the William Penn Commissioners, the patent dated1705. The land he occupied at th e time of his death was purchased in two blocks, one in 1713 and the other in 1718.on several other properties he owned. His home property is located about two miles south of present day Newtown. Nelson was a landowner and farmer, and an assemblyman in the Pennsylvania Legislature representing Bucks County,Pennsylvania.... Henry Nelson's birthdate is unknown. However, since he wasQuaker, the minutes of the Middletown Monthly Meeting record a number ofitems of interest concerning him. Marriage certificates for both his weddings are still available. ----- The minutes contain several instances of disagreements with other members. A committee was always appointed and the matter resolved in the ordinary manner of the Quakers, who rarely turned to the civilcourts in settling business conflicts. In the only case in which details are given, Nelson was ordered to pay L12, 12s, 6d, for a mare purchased from Jonathan Cooper...... The minutes for this transaction were dated 26th,12th, 1718. On 27th, 6th, 1719 Cooper was reported as satisfied. ----- Nelson evidently had a drinking problem as he is "taking to strong drink" was reported several times. In each case, until the last, he was reported to have agreed to correct his behavior. On the last charge,he was counselled with to no avail then ordered to appear at the next meeting. He did not, so the committee was told to prepare a report on the matter. This was read and accepted at the meeting of 4th, 6th, 1726. One source reports this as "disowning", but the minutes do not actually state that he was disowned--perhaps a reflection of his standing in the community, since the Quakers usually were not hesitant about disowning. Tthere is no further mention except as a wedding witness of Henry Nelson in the minutes.... ************ Will of Henry Nelson Will Book 2 page 50 Bucks County,Pennsylvania Will Made : April 11,1744
