Robert Gravenor Stewart Birth: Feb. 19, 1814 Waynesville Warren County Ohio, USA Death: Jan. 18, 1895 Paola Miami County Kansas, USA Son of Alexander and Rebecca Clark Stewart, husband of Nancy Vandervort Stewart. Father of seven children: Flavius Alexander Stewart, Cassius Newton Stewart, Mary E. Stewart (died as child), John Clark Stewart, Ivy Vandervort Stewart, Sarah Jane Stewart and Elizabeth (Libbie) Rebecca Stewart.

Obit - The Miami Republican: Paola, Miami Co., Ks., Friday, January 25, 1895 pg. 3 Robert G. Stewart, who died at his home near Paola Jan. 18, 1895, was born in Warren co., Ohio, in Feb., 1814. His parents and grandparents were natives of North and South Carolina, to which States their ancestors, the Stewarts and Clarks, had emigrated from Great Britain in early colonial times. Early in this century his grandparents, with their families, prompted as many thousands of others in the slave States were by comparative poverty and hostility to the institution of slavery, moved to Ohio. Mr. Stewart's father, Alexander, and mother, Rebecca Clark Stewart, were married in 1807 Warren Co., Ohio, and began their married life about as near empty handed as the conditions of simple existence would allow.

While poor and of limited education, the means of education were very limited in those time, they were sensible, industrious, frugal and honest, and gained so rapidly in property that within thirty years they were classed with the independent farmers of the country. They had nine children, three sons and six daughters. Two of the sons died in youth leaving Robert to become his fathers efficient assistant in the management of their rapidly growing business affairs. The family were members of the Baptist church, parents and children all joining early in life. By their almost unaided efforts about 1841, a church was erected on their farm, in which, chiefly by means of contributions from the family, services were maintained for many years. The people of this community know that Robert Stewarts life here has been consistent with his profession of faith and they may be assured that he was the same in his home in Ohio. In 1843, Mr. Stewart was married to Miss Nancy Vandervort, whose family were also early settlers in Warren co., Ohio from Virginia.

Mrs. Stewart still lives in remarkable preservation for the survivor of a married life of more than half a century. They had seven children, four sons and three daughters, all living but the first daughter, who died in childhood. Mr. & Mrs. Stewart seemed suited to each other by reason of similar tastes, habits and opinions, and their married life has doubtless been a happy one. Three sons and one daughter are married and among them have twenty-one children. In 1869, Mr. Stewart came with his family to Kansas and established his home where he lived until his death. Having known Robert Stewart since I was old enough to know anybody, having known all the more important circumstances and the surroundings of his life, being indebted to him for unvarying friendship and many kindnesses, knowing a great deal of good of him and scarcely a grain of evil, I feel that it is my duty to his memory to bear testimony that he was a good man. He was honest, industrious, temperate, hospitable, generous, charitable and modest to humility. He was a patriotic, citizen. During the war of the rebellion he contributed promptly and liberally to the support of the soldiers families. There was no luke-warmness in his loyalty. He hated the institution of slavery. He was a Republican by birthright. While too modest and unassuming, too conscious of his unfitness, both by inclination and qualification, to take any leading part in politics, I have never known a man more alive to the duty of voting and learning how to vote right. I think it would be hard to find a man who, in proportion to ability, had been a better citizen. By the measures of success in life most approved by the sum of human experience, the life of Mr. Stewart must be admitted to have been more than usual enviable. His lot was cast in the middle ground, between poverty and riches, in a country where civil and religious liberty were rights so undisputed as to seem inherent in the air and soil, as well as rooted in the constitution and the laws; in peaceful communities of happy people, surrounded by his wife and children and relatives and friends, by whom he always knew he was honored; living to a good old age; preserving his faculties to the end, and dying without the affliction of much pain firm in the faith that he would live again.

T.E. Smith Also on the same page - Ivy Stewart, a son of the late Robert G. Stewart of Paola-twp., arrived Monday from Mesa, Arizona, just in time to attend his fathers funeral, going direct from the railroad train to the cemetery. Mr. Stewarts daughter, Maud, came with him and they expect to visit here several weeks.
