Clark County Democrat, Marshall, Clark County, Illinois. 22 May 1929
Reuben, third son of John and Anna Tingley, was born in Clark county, near Martinsville, Illinois, December 10, 1844 and departed this life Mary 12, 1929, aged 84 years, 6 month and 2 days. On Dec. 24, 1866 he was united in marriage to Georgiann Bostwick. They settled on a farm near the parental home, where they lived and worked together until April 16, 1892, when death separated them, the dear wife and mother parting to the Great Beyond. To this union seven children were born, two sons and five daughters. Two daughters have preceded him in death, Mrs. Alfaretta McDaniel on July 5, 1917 and Mrs. Emma Smith on September 10, 1828.
On January 22, 18998, he was united in marriage to Carrie Frye. To this union three children were born, tow of which preceded him death, Denzil in infancy and Donald on May 1, 1928. In early manhood he united with the Mr. Pleasant Christian church but for several years his health has been so poor he could not attend the services. For many years he was one of the most prosperous farmers of his time. At the time of his death he was the oldest resident of his community. During his last years it has been the custom of his children and grandchildren to meet with him at the old home on his birthday anniversary. He always looked forward to this event from year to year.
He will be sadly missed in the home and in the community for he was a faithful husband and father and a friend to all. He was always ready to lend a hand where help was needed and to offer a word of friendly advice or encouragement. During his illness everything that could be done was done to lengthen his lease on life, but God's will, not ours, be done. He leaves to mourn his departure a wife, two sons, Nathan and Harry near Marshall, four daughters Mrs. Ella Snowden of Indianapolis, Mrs. Kate Murphy, of near Marshall; Mrs. Margaret Martin, of Highland City, Florida; and Mrs. Hazel Sweet of near Martinsville, three stepdaughters and one stepson, Mrs. Gertrude Chaney, of near Kansas, Illinois, Mrs. Mattie O'Brien of near Martinsville. Mrs. Nora Wise, and Arthur Frye, of Ohio; two brothers, John and Julius of Terre Haute, also thirty-three grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
