John Berry Yates was born 31 Mar 1830, in the Four corners area in Hardin County, Kentucky. John was the son of William Yates Sr, and Nancy J Holland. William was the son of Elias Yates and a brother of Robert Yates.
John Berry married Mary Margaret Berry-Scifers, a widow, on 01 Nov 1849, by George H Hicks, a Baptist Minister. Mary Margaret was born 23 Dec 1828, Ky and died 15 Apr 1889.
John Berry Yates was a private in Company "G" commanded by Capt. Hill in the 12th Regiment of the Cavalry Volunteers of the State of Kentucky, commanded originally by Col Shanks but in the war of 1861, Col Crittender. John died while in the service, at his home in Hardin County, Ky. on 13 Jan 1863, from camp fever (probably measles) incurred in the service and whilst in the line of his duty whilst he was at home on sick leave of absence of disease contracted whilst in the line of duty. Their home was on the wagon road from Litchfield to West Point and 15 miles west of Elizabethtown, Ky.
John left on command at Munfordville, Hart Co., Ky in the month of January 1863.
