John R Sewell Birth: 1837 Lone Oak Meriwether County Georgia, USA Death: Jun. 2, 1864 Petersburg Petersburg City Virginia, USA John was son of Elizabeth C. Lee, who was b. July 27, 1816, Laurens Co., SC, dau. of Zacharia Lee and Rebecca Brock. Elizabeth married James Lovic Sewell and they lived in Lone Oak, Meriwether Co., GA. John's brother, William Parks Sewell, is also buried in this cemetery (Allen Lee Memorial UMC). John R Sewell enlisted July 12, 1861: Pvt, Co. B, 2nd Regiment, GA Vol. Infantry (Meriwether County). Army Northern VA. Known as the "Jackson Blues" also "Georgia Blues." Pension records show John died at Petersburg, VA in service on June 20, 1864. No explanation for the date conflict on headstone except for possible mistake that was not corrected. June 20 was two days into the seige of Petersburg, and is a very plausible date of death. Petersburg is one of 38 independent cities in Virginia. Because counties have historically been the focus of local government in most of the U.S., independent cities are relatively rare outside of Virginia (e.g. Boston, MA).
