A close call by Russell regarding his aircrew:

The Route as Briefed: by John S. Sloan regarding this incident:

(The success of this mission of March 3, 1945 was marred by a serious accident on the return. Over the Brussels area, the aircraft piloted by 2nd Lt. Arthur H. Huether of the 327th Squadron, flying No. 6 position in the Lead Squadron, hit prop wash and dropped down, striking the aircraft piloted by 2nd Lt. Erwin F. Schmidt of the 327th Squadron, lead of the low element. Lt. Schmidt's ship, struck at the radio room, broke into three pieces, and both aircraft spiraled down out of the formation.

One parachute came from Lt. Schmidt's aircraft; its sole survivor was S/Sgt. Edward W. Bartley, Jr., the tail gunner. In addition to Lt. Schmidt, fatalities included 2nd Lt. William A. Dalton, the copilot; 2nd Lt. Cletus R. Brown, the navigator; F/O Marcus H. McCrery, bombardier; S/Sgt. Charles A. Oilman, radio; S/Sgt. Robert R. Deignan, engineer; Sgt. Ray E. Wold, ball turret; and Sgt. Richard P. Fischer, waist gunner. Sgt. Marshall P. Dellinger, ball turret gunner of Lt. Huether's crew, was killed when his parachute failed to open; all other members of the crew survived.)
