Newspaper clipping from 1949 (West Salem Advocate): And now it's a 1750 pound Horse that fell in a well! First of all, Kenny Giese's bull took a dip, and now John Yates' big horse has tried it, only to be rescued by Walt Giese's big wrench truck. It all happened when Yates and his team were plowing up a patch north of where his son, Colonel, lives here in town. John took the team and plowed ground part way when Colonel took over, only to have the plow strike a root, which heaved the little horse against the big one and the big horse fell into the well. The horse's head and front feet remained on top and the un-excited animal munched away at nearby grass until it was freed.
