- Barbara Ann (George) Yates passed away peacefully at home in Hoopeston, IL, on February 25, 2015. She was 86. A free spirit with a nurturing disposition, Barbara's love of life was surpassed only by her love of family. They will remember her as a devoted mother, a doting grandmother, and a delightful great-grandmother. Barbara was born on August 6, 1928 in Metcalf, IL, the only child of Walter and Imogene (Willis) George. After graduating from Metcalf High School in 1946, she married Fred Yates, also of Metcalf, on Thanksgiving Day 1947 in Paris, IL. The couple initially made their home in San Diego, CA, where Fred served in the Navy. They subsequently returned to Edgar County and settled in the town of Chrisman. In addition to raising a family there, she worked in the insurance field for many years. Barbara was a longtime member of Metcalf Christian Church. Following retirement, she made her home in Hoopeston and began attending the First Christian Church. She quickly endeared herself to new neighbors and friends within the community. Her signature blue streak of hair, the result of a grandson's dare, embodied an adventurous enthusiasm that will be sorely missed by those who knew her. She is survived by her children, Deborah Yates of Hoopeston, IL; Andrea (Dana) Russett of Richmond Hill, GA; and Timothy (Cyndi) Yates of Hoopeston, IL. She also leaves behind six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents. Her six grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers. A graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at Woodland Cemetery in Chrisman, IL.
