      Walter W. Fondren, 5S, president of Fondren Oil Co. and son of a founder of Humble Oil and Refining Co., died Wednesday night when he choked on a piece of steak. Fondren, 3940 Inverness, was dining with business associates in the International Room of the Shamrock Hilton Hotel. He was taken to Hermann Hospital, where attempts to revive him with adrenalin and heart massage failed. Humble Founder Fondren's father, Walter W. Fondren, Sr., was one of the nine founders of Humble in 1917. The senior Fondren and his wife became leading philanthropists. Fondren, Jr., was director of the Fondren Foundation, a civic and charitable institution. He had extensive land holdings in Texas and was a director of the National Bank of Commerce. He was a member of St John the Divine Church, River Oaks Country Club and the Houston Club. Millions Donated He attended Rice University and was graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in geology and petroleum engineering. The Fondren family has given millions to educational, medical, religious and charitable groups. After the senior Fondren's death in 1939, Mrs. Fondren donated $1 million toward founding Fondren Library at Rice University. Other Family Gifts The family's gifts made possible the $2 million Fondren Hall of Science at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. The foundation has donated $2 million to the Methodist Hospital in Houston. Contributions also have been made to Baylor University College of Medicine, Methodist Home for Children.
