Notes - [SOURCE; From: Russell Allen; February 3, 2017 10:58 AM; Subject: Blind Allens(Allins) of Prudence; Hello Dave, Ron, Helen, I stumbled across your names while doing some research. My name is Russell Allen and a direct descendant of Joshua of the Blind Allens who is my 4th Great Grandfather, my grandfather Charles E. Allen gathered the notes for my Uncle Devere Allen to write the manuscript " Some Prudence Island Allens" I have been researching the family for over 20 years. First, I would like to say it is correct that Thomas & Rebecca and the family of Blind Allens did not perished on the trip West. The first 3 daughters who were not blind were married and stayed behind. Thomas & Rebecca along with the remaining 8 children made the trip. Joshua was not blind the other 7 were. They left on board the sloop " Sally " on Sept 4th 1794.The Sally was mastered by Cyrus Allen. travelled up the Hudson to Albany. Other families also went McNairs and Peeresses. It is true blind Sweet and John stayed behind in Amsterdam while the parents and other 6 children followed the Mohawk to Middlesex, Yates County. Durfee was a stepson and nephew of Tom and Rebecca who lost his parents at a young age. Hope this helps. Best regards, Russell Allen]
Thomas Allen and Rebecca Allen, cousins who were descendants of William Allen (1640-1685), who came to Rhode island from Wales, Yorkshire, England, to settle on Prudence Island in the Narragansett Bay. Thomas Allen was the son of a later William Allen and his wife, Freelove Tillinghast. Rebecca Allen was the daughter of John Allen and Rebeckah Hill. In his genealogy on the Prudence Island Allens, DeVere Allen writes in great detail about Thomas and Rebecca (Allen) Allen's family, which he calls the "blind Allens." This reflects the fact that the mother and several children were blind. In the 1790s, as the family tried to move to upstate New York from Prudence Island, several members perished on the boat they used. Some survived, but their story truly is a tragic one.
