  • Notes
    • [SOURCE; From: Russell Allen; February 3, 2017 10:58 AM; Subject: Blind Allens(Allins) of Prudence; Hello Dave, Ron, Helen, I stumbled across your names while doing some research. My name is Russell Allen and a direct descendant of Joshua of the Blind Allens who is my 4th Great Grandfather, my grandfather Charles E. Allen gathered the notes for my Uncle Devere Allen to write the manuscript " Some Prudence Island Allens" I have been researching the family for over 20 years. First, I would like to say it is correct that Thomas & Rebecca and the family of Blind Allens did not perished on the trip West. The first 3 daughters who were not blind were married and stayed behind. Thomas & Rebecca along with the remaining 8 children made the trip. Joshua was not blind the other 7 were. They left on board the sloop " Sally " on Sept 4th 1794.The Sally was mastered by Cyrus Allen. travelled up the Hudson to Albany. Other families also went McNairs and Peeresses. It is true blind Sweet and John stayed behind in Amsterdam while the parents and other 6 children followed the Mohawk to Middlesex, Yates County. Durfee was a stepson and nephew of Tom and Rebecca who lost his parents at a young age. Hope this helps. Best regards, Russell Allen]

From: Town of Bristol Historian Date: Tue, 7 Aug 2012 Subject: Thomas Allen To: Yatesville1@gmail.com; Please be aware that Thomas Allen born ABT 1725 Prudence Island, RI did not die in Genesee Co, NY. The Allen family (Blind Allens) came to Ontario Co, NY called the Genesee Country. After 1821 that part of Ontario County became Yates County.

"Cleveland's History of Yates County" refers to them. It should also be noted that the cause of blindness currently has been identified as diabetes. Tracing the families of Allens and McNairs across the country it is noted that this condition has been carried on thru the families.

Early histories of this family are incorrect assuming that it was different incorrect cause. Wish this could be corrected as the medical history of this family is important. Helen C Fox Bristol Town Historian brhist@frontier.com

Ron, Hello! I stumbled across your website today doing a Google search on an elusive branch of my family - the Allens from the Portsmouth, RI area. If you don't mind, I have a couple questions for you and I may also be able to contribute to your Allens.

My biggest question is one I don't know that you can answer. I can trace my Allens back to Durfee Allen, Sr, b. 15 Aug 1787 in RI, d. 24 Feb 1856 in Prattsburgh, Steuben Co, NY (but he is buried in Middlesex, Yates County), his home of many years). One source, a letter copying a history of some sort, says Durfee Allen the first (he had a son named Durfee) "... was the step-son of the old man Thomas Allen..." If this is true, I may not truly have an Allen line past Durfee the first. Unfortunately, I have found no further information on these Allens other than several lived in Yates County (NY) and several of the siblings were blind (known as the Blind Allens).

Regardless, other on-line sources (primarily from Rootsweb, as I recall) suggest old man Thomas Allen is the same Thomas Allen listed on your web site as having been born in 1761 and married a Durfee. For what it's worth, the same lady who gave me this info says Thomas Allen was married to Durfee Young. I don't know her source for this information.

Thomas Allen's parents were Thomas and Rebekah Allen. It appears her maiden name really was Allen. I have his parents as William Allen and Freelove Tillinghast (agrees with your info). I have her parents as John Allen and Rebecca Hill.

A few online resources that may or may not be of interest to you:

http://archive.org/details/allengouldhillge00goul is a link to the descendants of William Allen of Prudence Island, RI. John Allen, married to Rebecca Hill (above) is the third generation from William and is Allen #20 in this book. Rebekah Allen, married to Thomas Allen, is Allen #63.

http://archive.org/details/descendantsoftho00lcreed is a link to the descendants of Thomas Durfee of Portsmouth, RI. This book is the first of two volumes. In it I can trace the Durfees down to the point where a Sarah Durfee of Portsmouth, RI married John Allen, Jr of Prudence Island, RI on 9 Apr 1747(p. 199). It appears highly likely to me that John Allen, Jr. was the sixth child of John Allen and Rebecca Hill. Their John was born 26 Oct 1725 on Prudence Island.

Unfortunately for me, I have all this enticing information about the Rhode Islandl Allens, but very little info is available on the Allens that moved to Yates County, NY. Still, I hope the above references prove useful to you in your research.

      Sincerely, Dave Mosbruger
