- Ron, Laban Gregory was the son of Nancy Snowden and Milton (aka Minton) Gregory. Milton died in the poor farm in 1856 but Nancy and the kids are living with Nancy's parents, Joseph and Nancy Newkirk Snoden (Snowden) in Sterling Township. Nancy Sr. was a Newkirk, daughter of Cornelius Newkirk and maybe Elizabeth Powell. I haven't confirmed the mother yet. I am not related to this family, but Elias' Newkirk's daughter, Mary Francis, was the first wife of George W. Sinclair Jr., brother of my g-g-grandfather Ransom.
Thursday, April 09, 2009 From: Howard To: Ron Yates Subject: Re: Laban John Gregory. Ron, My first email in regards to the attached email of Laban and the other men, it's perfect! Were you aware of the first Laban (Labe's grandfather)? I am descended from him through my grandmother. Everyone has their story and you can be sure this first Laban had quite a story at how he came to reside in English, Indiana so many years ago. After being sued for a paternity suit, and lost, he sued 6 months later for custody and won. With that win he and his family left for Kentucky for a year and then ended up in English, Indiana. The separated Gregory's lost touch of each other for many years. I had the chance of meeting Truman Gregory whose family remained behind. I saw that he was looking for descendants of Laban and contacted him back in the early 1990's before he died. I flew to TN and we took a day trip around Nixon's Hollow looking for the original family grave site. I just uploaded a photo of it to Benjamin 'Bry' Gregory's profile on Ancestry.com. Thank you for sharing. Howie
4/26/2009 The Gregory line to Minton is as follows: Thomas>Bry>Laban>Minton(aka:Menton) I wasn't aware that Margaret married two more times after Minton passed away in 1850. My records show her father as Joseph Snowden born about 1802, I don't have a maiden name for her mother, just the first name of Sarah. Both Joseph and Sarah were born in Kentucky. My source for this information is the 1850 Federal Census, Crawford Co., IN. From my notes: "Minton Gregory passed away about 6 months before the 1850 census was taken. Nancy and her children are living with her parents."
4/27/2009 Ron, I am related to Laben Gregory through Electa Gregory who married Millard Fillmore Shields. I would certainly appreciate a copy of him. Thanks for the great job you do. Debby Ruffin
