4/25/2009 It was easy enough to find your Henry with his parents William b. ca 1835 Ala and Rhoda b. ca 1830 KY in the 1870 census for Madison County. Since Mary was 13 yrs then she should have appeared with William & Rhoda in the 1860 census.
The three of them were in Madison County (indexed as McKiney) 1860 census along with Robert McKiney who was the right age to be William's father.
Going backwards one more decade, Robert McKinney (indexed as Mc Kinney) was enumerated in 1850 also in Madison County along with wife, Martha, and their son, William. Since Robert appeared with the adult William in 1860 it makes sense (but is not proof) that Robert is William's father.
I hope you are not put off by the information about Robert that he was "insane". That could mean a lot of different things than how we use the word now. He could have had early onset Alzheimer's; he could have had an accident that resulted in brain damage; he could have had a stroke and therefore could not talk or respond appropriately. Without more information, we just don't know.
Going back one more decade to find Robert (at least he wasn't a John, James or William!!); there was Robert in the adjoining Jackson County, Alabama in 1840 with a household that was a perfect match to his 1850 household.
In 1830 he was also in Jackson County with himself and his wife. No children. Again - a perfect possibility.
Now - what other McKinney families were in Madison County: the family of Thomas McKinney and his wife, Jane (or sometimes seen as Jean). This is a well documented family with earliest records when John McKinney m. Jane/Jean Sharp in Roane County, Tennessee 1804. Below is information from my notes about this family. There is no Robert included.
In addition to the families of Robert & Martha McKinney and Thomas & Jane McKinney in 1850 Madison County was Rebon McKinney b. 1805 and his wife, Betsey. They also had a William and a David in their household which might suggest that these were family names and that Robert and Rebon/Rubin were related. Also enumerated there were James b. 1813 who was a son of Thomas & Jane. I will see what I can find out about this Rebon/Rubin.
In the 1850 census Robert b. ca 1805 +/- 5 yrs had unknown birthplace. In 1860 he was reported b. in VA. Later census records, William reported his father b. VA (in 1880).
If you could follow any of Robert & Martha's other children to the 1880 census to see where they reported their father born, you might have a clue as to his parentage.
What to do next in terms of finding a genetic match? I would trace all of Robert & Martha's children to see if any living descendants of those other lines have any information on the family. I would be especially interested in the sons since any direct line male McKinney descendants from any of those other boys in the household should be your genetic match. (Assuming, of course, that William was not adopted or illegitimate!)
We do have a McKinney line that traces the ancestry to Roane County, Tennessee where Thomas McKinney m. Jane Sharp. But we have no participants from Thomas' line and so we don't know if they are related or not. http://www.familytreedna.com/public/McKinney/default.aspx?section=yresults See Group 18.
Also very early in Madison County (on some tax lists about 1810 - 1816) was Wilson McKinney. If this is the same Wilson, we do have a participant of this line: See Group 14.
You know that William & Rhoda had another son, Walter. Did Walter have sons and grandsons? Have you found any living McKinney males from that line? It would be very useful to have yDNA information on such a person.
As you seek out and find male descendants for your McKinney line go very, very carefully toward the subject of yDNA testing!! Some people are absolutely paranoid about it. Gain their trust first and then ease into the subject.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the first record of Robert McKinney is in Jackson County not in Madison County. Were there other McKinney's there? Did he live on the border of the county so that he actually lived very close to Madison and to any other McKinney's in Madison? It would make a difference if he was really born in Virginia instead of Tennessee. If the former it would definitely rule out any of those Roane County, Tennessee married couples as his parents.
