Notes - William was a son of James R. Riggle (b. 1791 in VA) and Elizabeth Jenkins (b. 1794 in VA). His known siblings include: Charity (b. 1816), Mary Elizabeth (1827-1888), James (1830-1888), Lurana (1833-1909); also brother of Henry C. (1838-1923) and George W. (1834-1892), both of whom also served in Co. K, 38th Indiana Infantry. Riggle was married to Mary Jane (b. @1830 in KY) and together they had the following known children: Loucinda (b. @1862), and Lurana (b. @1849). At the time William enlisted in Co. K, he was a 5'8" tall, 36 year old cooper who had hazel eyes, brown hair, and a fair complexion. Riggle received a promotion to CPL during his time in the service. He was wounded in action at the Battle of Stones River, TN on Dec. 31, 1862. Afterwards, he was sent to a Louisville military hospital to recover. Riggle was discharged due to the Stones River wounds on May 2, 1863. He applied for a federal pension on July 2, 1863 (app. #27,812; cert. # 199,136). Toward the end of the war, he served in Co. D, 144th Indiana Infantry.
