  • Notes
    • Gary Bruce Cox, 57, formerly of Mattoon, Humboldt, and Philo; died June 30, 2009 of heart failure in the Philippines. Bruce was born August 18, 1951 in Lawrenceville, IL, the son of George Warren and Beatrice Juanita (Miller) Cox. He graduated from Mattoon High School in 1969 and attended the GM Automotive Engineering School in Nashville, TN. He was proud of his father's service in WW II; and Bruce was ready to serve. He was inducted into the army, but he received an early discharge due to health problems.

Bruce is survived by sons, Seth J. [Bobbie] Cox and Graham Acen [Kendra] Cox, granddaughter, Lilith Reign Cox, and former wife Candis Marie (Poorman) Stein; all of Tucson, Arizona. He is also survived by his sister Carlotta Joyce (Cox) St.Michael [Justin], niece Chelsea B. St.Michael, nephews Brandon [DeAnn] St.Michael, Colin St.Michael, & Evan Z. St.Michael; all of Mattoon, nephew Cameron D. St.Michael of Charleston, IL; and great-nephew Calvin St.Michael of Terre Haute, IN. and great-niece Kayla Tolliver-St.Michael of Mattoon. He is also survived by his extended large family and friends, especially life long friend Jim Hendricks of Champaign.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Fred Leonard & Bertha Louisa (Williams) Miller and Percy Douglas & Mae Belle (McGuire) Cox; and great grandmother, Hannah Janie (Jones) McGuire.

Bruce retired as an engineer from Kraft Foods in Champaign where he received several registered patents for his inventions. He also had worked at Lowe's as an Illinois commercial contractor liaison. In his early years, he ran his own construction company, Cox Roofing and siding, in Mattoon. He liked his motorcycles, his camping trailer, traveling, and cooking (using old family recipes and creating his own cookbook).

He was the family genealogist, researching diligently to accumulate history, names, and information for over 29,000 persons. He also set up an extensive website and military website plus produced CDs with the family genealogy. He reached out, greatly expanded our family, and brought us closer together.

A memorial potluck dinner for family and friends is planned for Saturday, July 25, from Noon to whenever, at Lawson Park on S. 14th St., Mattoon, and is open to anyone wishing to join us in remembering Bruce. If you can't make it to the meal, please feel free to join us later. Memorial gifts may be made to Joyce St.Michael, 801 S. 15th St., Mattoon, IL. Contributions will go to a fund for Lilith Cox or continued support for the family website and publications. As Bruce would say, "See you on the beach."
