  • Notes
    • John was the son of Thomas and Mary (Talmadge) Hand. His grandfather, John, was one of the original 9 families of East Hampton. John, the grandfather, arrived in Massachusetts Bay about 1636 and is probably buried in "southend" burying ground. John's father Thomas bought property in Cape May around 1695. They were whalers. John first married an unknown lady who was the mother of Nathaniel, both died soon after. He then married Mercy Crowel 1670-1747 both in Cape May, NJ. His father and John were prominent and powerful whaler yeomen in Cape May. John and his wife were some of the original organizers of Cold Spring Church. There was a clear cold spring where parishioners could come on Sundays for water. In the Stars and Stripes magazine there was an article which stated the house at 1129 Washington St was once owned by John and his wife. The present house may be built over the original log cabin. John and his wife may be buried at Cold Spring
