  • Notes
    • Atlanta Constitution Dec 9, 1886. pg 2 THE DAILY NEWS BRIEFED Mr. Levi Clements, of Berrien County, near Ray's mill, happened to a serious accident several days ago. He was hauling cane to the mill and his son was throwing the cane in at the back end of the cart when that vehicle tilted up and the mule attached began to show fright. Mr. Clements seized the bridle and the animal jerked him down, turned the cart over, and drew the body of the cart over him. Mr. Clements was badly bruised and crippled and lay unconscious for some time. He is paralyzed from his hips down. At last accounts he was improving some, but is yet in a precarious condition. Levi Jordan Clements was the eighth child of David G. Clements. He married Rowena Elizabeth Pattern, daughter of William and Elizabeth Register Pattern. They owned a farm between Nashville and Milltown (Lakeland), Ga. After being paralyzed from the waist down by run-a-way mules, he sold his farm and built a home in Rays Mill (Ray City) along with four of his sons. He bought a lumber mill called The Clements Lumber Co. His sons, Lucius, Joe and Irvin ran the mill until it went bankrupt after World War I. Mr. Clements and his wife are buried in Empire Primitive Baptist cemetery. His wife, Rowena, was born 1858 and died in 1953. (Source: Fondren-Clements Papers; transcribed by Ronald E.
