- Monday, April 13, 2009 I'm writing to give you an update on mom. She has been in the Alzheimer's unit of a local care center for over four years. For the last year or more she has not really recognized us or anyone else around her. She has been content and relatively healthy, but just there. For the last few days she has had some vomiting. Today she seemed worse. She got an x-ray which showed a sigmoid volvulus, a large bowel obstruction. The treatment would be surgery with a colostomy, but this is obviously is not an option for mom. Untreated, a large bowel obstruction is absolutely fatal. We have elected to admit her to the local hospital for minimal IV fluids and morphine drip to keep her comfortable. We're not sure how long things will take to work out, but hopefully not long. Larry Starr

Social Security Death Index Name: Imogene Elizabeth Starr SSN: 347-34-2956 Last Residence: 88310 Alamogordo, Otero, New Mexico Born: 28 Aug 1922 Died: 18 Apr 2009 State (Year) SSN issued: Illinois (1958-1959)
Imogene Starr passed away Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born Aug. 28, 1922, in Edgar County, Ill., as the youngest of six children to Ella Harmon Yates and Arthur Yates. She married Lenwood Starr in Chrisman, Ill., on Aug. 22, 1940. They were married almost 63 years when Lenwood passed away in 2003.
She is survived by her children Wardie and Donna Starr, of Bourbonnais, Ill., Mary Jane and Gerard Nyssen, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Larry and Nancy Starr, of Alamogordo; by 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Fern, and brothers Lee, Charles, John and Wilber Yates.
Imogene and Lenwood moved to Alamogordo from Bourbonnais in 1983 after retirement to escape the cold winters in Illinois and be close to their youngest grandchildren. They spent their time caring for their grandchildren, attending sporting events and band/choir concerts. They especially enjoyed going to the Alamogordo Senior Center every day for lunch and visiting with many friends. Imogene and Lenwood were familiar sights around Alamogordo, often walking their little Dachshund in the early mornings. She was an active member of the Alamogordo Church of the Nazarene until health issues prevented her from attending.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 23, 2009, at the Alamogordo Funeral Home with Reverend Garth Hyde officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service at the funeral home. There will be a family graveside ceremony at Monte Vista Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Aristocrat Special Care Center for their kind and compassionate care to Imogene during the last four years of her life. The Starr family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place locally at PCS.
