The Buckeye Valley News March 27, 1954, issue reports: "The heart of this community was saddened this week when a tragic explosion and fire destroyed the home of Carl Hegi and took the lives of his wife and two of his children, early Wednesday morning. A defective fuel oil heater in their farm home a mile and a half Southwest of town was the cause of the fire. Dead are the mother, Helen Hegi, 33, Lloyd, 5 and Peggy, 3.
