    • U.S. VeteranPercy Eugene “Gene” McCoy, 85, of Mt. Vernon, IN passed away February 12, 2017 at his home. He was born August 23, 1931 in New Harmony, IN to Percy F. and Lola V. (Ricketts) McCoy.

      Gene was a 1949 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School and was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Korea during the Korean War. He was employed by Farm Bureau Refinery for 13 years and later joined Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance Company for over 20 years. An active member of his community, he acted as Posey County Recorder, and was a member of the Mt. Vernon City Council for 13 years. Gene served on the Posey County Coliseum Board. He was a longtime Democratic member, serving as Precinct Committeeman. Gene was also on the Holding Committee for the Metropolitan School District of Mt. Vernon. From 1998-2016, Gene served as a Posey County Veteran Service Officer, and was a member of the American Legion Post #5 and VFW 1114. He was a longtime active member of Faith United Methodist Church, where he served on the Pastor Parish Committee, adult Sunday School teacher, trustee, and past President of the Administrative Council. Gene enjoyed politics, reading, and morning coffee with friends at the Legion. He loved his family and the city of Mt. Vernon.

      He was preceded in death by his parents.

      He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara (Bass) McCoy of Mt. Vernon, IN; his three children, Terry (Donna) McCoy, Robin (Eric) Renschler and Jon McCoy, all of Evansville, IN; two granddaughters, Ali and Zoe Renschler; his two sisters, Elizabeth (Harold) Cox and Joy (Bill) Diefenbaugh, both of Mt. Vernon, IN; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

      Funeral service will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, February 17, 2017, at Schneider Funeral Home, 512 Main St. Mt. Vernon, IN, with Rev. John Motz officiating and burial to follow at Bellefontaine Cemetery. Military rites to be provided by the Owen Dunn Post #5 Honor Guard.
