KELLER, 89, CAME HERE AS GIRL OF 8 Lived Here During War and Had Many Terrifying Experiences - Funeral Will Be Tomorrow Mrs. Martha Mildred Keller, 89, widow of Sylvanus Keller, well known resident of the district, died at 6:30 o'clock this morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Ed Holdeman, 10 miles northeast of Carthage, Mrs. Keller had been bedfast the last eight years due to a fractured hip. Born February 24, 1844 in Kentucky, Mrs. Keller's parents, Mrs. and Mrs. John Bastin, moved to Jasper county when she was eight years old. Her girlhood home was a short distance west of the New Hope school. She was married September 6, 1860 to Sylvanus Keller, who died November 3, 1923 at their home in Kendricktown. Mr. Keller enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War, going to Springfield to enter service. Mrs. Keller often related many experiences while her husband was away at war. Her home was visited several times by raiders and she and her neighbors lived in constant terror during that time. Twelve children were born to the couple, eight whom survive. Those surviving are: W. C. Keller of Nowata, OK., Tom Keller of Kendricktown, Albert Keller of Reeds 2 and C. E. Keller of Reeds route 1, Mrs. Mary Stevenson of Carthage, Mrs. H. W. Griggs of Jane, MO., Mrs. E. Baker of Reeds route 1 and Mrs. Holdeman. She was a member of the Christian church. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Avilla Christian church. The Rev. J. C. Nininger and Dr. G. F. Harbour will be in charge. Burial will be in Williams Cemetery southeast of Avilla. Family links: Parents: John A. Bastin (1811 - 1857) Martha A.
