Mary A. Watson was the daughter of John and Cassie Yates Martin, and was born on a farm near the village of Grantsburg, Crawford County, Indiana, July 17, 1838, and died at her home in Paoli, Indiana, August 17, 1908. She was married to Isaac N. Taylor, August 20, 1856. Two children were born to them, who are still living. Mr. Taylor died July 7 1863, at Vicksburg, Mississippi.

August 28, 1865, she was married to James M- Watson, who survives her. In her early girlhood she joined the Presbyterian Church while attending school under the control of that denomination. Soon after she and Brother Watson were married, they both united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and in 1874 he was admitted to the traveling connection in the Indiana Conference, having supplied the Fredericksburg Circuit for two years previous. In all the various fields of labor to which her husband was assigned, Sister Watson proved to be a worthy and efficient co-worker in the master’s vineyard.

For many years she was directly engaged in evangelistic work, not only in her husband's charge, but also assisting other pastors in their revival work. As a thinker she was clear and consecutive; as a speaker, earnest and forceful, holding the attention of her audience from the beginning to the close of her discourse. In 1891 her husband retired from the active work of the ministry, and they settled at Paoli, after seventeen years of toil in cultivating the various fields to which they had been assigned.

The last five years of her life she was greatly afflicted and could do nothing more than wait in the shadows of the coming night for the dawning of a grander day. That day came at last, and her triumphant spirit, released from earth, entered the Father's house of "many mansions” Her body rests in the cemetery at Grantsburg, near the place of her birth. Her funeral services were conducted by Rev. M. S. Heavenridge. (SOURCE: SEVENTY-FIRST SESSION OF THE INDIANA ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, HELD SEPTEMBER 1902)
