- (This is a story present on the internet which requires modification; "When their children were all very young, Catherine died, and Sanford went into the Civil War. He returned from the war in 1863 with a severe case of the measles, from which he soon died. The children were taken into homes of relatives and friends to be raised. Melissa was taken into the home of Carr Apple, a friend of the family, where she grew to womanhood - and married Carr's son, Lon Apple; Beckie was raised by her uncle James Bennett."
The modifications are: Catherine is listed as the Widow of Sanford; she died young but after Sanford had died; the other modification is it is highly unlikely that Sanford returned home with an acute case of measles; he was hospitalized at Mound City, IL Military Hospital and died there on January 20, 1863. This is his "muster out" date and he is buried on this date at the Mound City National Cemetery Pulaski Co., IL. Ron Yates 11/18/2009)
