Death claimed Hugh Downs Mattingly, 87, well known retired farmer, Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock following a long illness at his home at St. Mary. Descendant of a pioneer Marion County family, he was a lifelong resident, widely related & known to practically everyone in the St. Mary section. He was born in this county on April 25, 1864, a son of John G. & Elizabeth Mattingly, long deceased. His wife preceded him to the grave. Three daughters & seven sons survive. They are Mrs. Thomas E. Spalding of St. Joseph, Mrs. Nick Mudd & Miss Mary Theresa Mattingly, both of St. Mary, the latter at home; Lawrence & Hugh Mattingly, at home; John C., Preston & Borremeo Mattingly of Louisville, & Charles & Thomas Mattingly of the county. There also are forty grandchildren & ten great-grandchildren. Hugh C. Spalding, superintendent of the Marion County schools, is a grandson. Funeral services were conducted at 9 o'clock yesterday morning at St. Charles Church by the Rev. Fred W. Dudine, & burial was in the church cemetery. Six grandsons served as pallbearers.
