- At least two of Williams Yates' "orphaned" sons participated by enlisting in the Army of the Confederate States of America (Richmond, Virginia, was the capitol city of the new country): • Charles Patty Yates (17 years of age in 1861) enlisted on June 6, 1861, was a "Private" assigned to the 21st Regiment of Company A of the Campellton Home Guards of the Georgia Volunteer Infantry of the Army of the Confederate States of America. He was subsequently "killed-inaction" (KIA) at the Battle of Chancellorsville (May 2 - 5, 1863), Virginia, on May 3, 1863 (at the age of 19). He is buried in an unmarked mass grave. The Union Army documented it's dead soldiers and provided them with a decent burial, but with the "rebels", it just dug a hole and dumped the enemy bodies into it.
