Minerva Yates Wishard
Minerva Yates, (daughter of John Yates, Jr., and Mary Swift Yates), was born 15 January 1830 in Southern Indiana. She came with her parents when a small child to Illinois and located near Olney, Richland, Illinois at which place her father died. Her widowed mother and family of ten children then moved to Jasper, Illinois and located one mile north of Gila, Jasper, Illinois (in 1846) when Aunt Minerva, as she was known to the entire community, was about 16 years old.
At the age of 14 she united with the U.B. Church at Olney, of which she was a member at the time of her death. In 1851 she was married to Silas Wishard. To them were born ten children, of whom seven survive, three having preceded her to the grave. The deceased are:
Walker, William, and Joseph. Surviving are Nancy C. Lee of Missouri; Mary E. Crabb of Sidell; Eliza J. Hall of Decatur; Virgil of South Dakota; Charles, whose address is unknown; Laura Wishard and Alice Cox, of near Gila.
She departed this life, August 20, 1921, at the home of the daughter, Alice Cox, with whom she had make her home for the past fifteen years. She leaves to mourn besides the children, forty-six grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. She was the last one of her father's family. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. James Story and burial was made in the Myers cemetery.
Hon. Silas Wishard, husband of Mrs. Minerva Wishard, was a pioneer lawyer of Newton and Jasper county. He passed away a third of a century ago. Mrs. Wishard lived to be the head of five generations, including herself---an honor that is shared by but few people in this life.
