Evert Lee Mason Death: Mar. 1, 1942 WWII US NAVY PURPLE HEART MIA Evert was that he was lost at sea during WWII. I now know the story behind his loss. He was on the U.S.S. Langley carrying planes Australia to Java on Feb. 27, 1942 when the ship was bombed by the Japanese. There were only about 16 casualties but the ship was so badly damaged all hands abandoned ship. The survivors were picked up by the U.S.S. Edsal and U.S.S. Whipple. On March 1st they were transferred to the Oiler ship the U.S.S. Pecos which was also carrying survivors from other ships. On Mar. 2nd the Pecos was bombed by the Japanese and all hands had to abandon ship. The Japanese planes strafed with machine guns the survivors in the water then flew off and left them with no attempt to save anyone. A few survivors were picked up by a nearby American ship but, that ship had to leave when Japanese submarines arrived. The submarines did not pick up any survivors. It is estimated 700 lives were lost that day. The entire story is in the book, "Pawns of War: The Loss of the U.S.S. Langley and U.S.S. Pecos". Evert was the 1st casualty from Crawford County and the V.F.W.
