    • Simon Hammond; Died: Monday, December 27, 2004 Simon Hammond, 97, Taswell, died Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, at Memorial Hospital in Jasper.

      A native of Crawford County, born June 7, 1907, he was the son of the late James Dale and Elizabeth Lamon Hammond. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Hammond; a son, Gordon Hammond; two daughters, Mary Ruth Brown and Joyce Hammond; six brothers, and three sisters.

      He was a retired farmer and employee of the old Cornwell Co. in Paoli, a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of VFW Post 6160 in English. Survivors include three sons, Robert S. Hammond of Depauw, Ralph E. Hammond of Georgetown and Gary L. Hammond of English; three daughters, Janet Walton of Taswell, Louise Wright of Eckerty and Shirley White of Petersburg; caregiver Margie Underhill; 26 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

      Funeral: Thursday, Dec. 30, at Denbo Funeral Home in English with burial in Taswell Cemetery. Officiant: The Rev. Brian Martin. Military graveside rites: Performed by members of VFW Post 6160. Soloists: The Wiseman Brothers. Pallbearers: Doug Smith, Paul White, Travis Hammond, Eric Bean, Doug Hammond, Gordon Wright, Bill Bean and Jeff Hammond.
