Joan Rambo KINKATCHER@aol.com ; Sent: Sunday, October 28, 2001 5:50 PM; To: ryates@rr1.net Well, when you've been doing this as long as I have, you'll know lots, too. But, thank you for your comment. We have one small IN connection. Reuben Yates b ca 1787 NC, moved around a whole bunch, and didn't leave much of a paper trail. We do know he was in KY as early as 1815 (and probably a little earlier then that) to prior then 1827 when one son was b in MO. A dau, Mahala Yates, was b ca 1832 "somewhere" in IN, next child MO, and the rest from 1837 on, were b in AR. I descend from first son, John Yates b ca 1815 KY, and a descendant from fourth son has family stories, which include Reuben "may have been" a shoe and saddle salesman. And, he "may have been" in Terre Haute, IN (that's Vigo Co). I found records for a brother to Reuben in Montgomery Co, OH as early as 1818 when settlement on his estate began. One brother stayed in Randolph Co, NC, and the others appear to have gone to KY, with one going to TN at some time. Then some of them stayed in KY, and others, along with Reuben drifted down to AR. Your KY to IN is a common migration pattern. I have ancestors who went from Hardin Co, KY to your area in IL. They settled in Clark Co, but when it was larger, the area became Cole Co, the Cumberland Co. I sure wish they'd have left well enough alone, Cole Co, has good records, but darn ole Cumberland Co had a courthouse fire. I have a John Bell, he died, between 1841 and 1844, I can't look for probate or even land records in Cumberland Co. With a name that common it hurts. His wife is a double mystery. Hettie Ann Neighbors, but on the marriage record I am sure is theirs she uses Radley as surname. I was working on the theory she had a stepfather named Radley, but with guidance from some experts in Salt Lake City, I'm thinking her mother may have been unmarried. The Radley family is something else. I did some searching in Hardin Co, KY records, and the story is too long to tell, but let's just say they are very interesting. At the time your Yates and mine were in KY, Barren and Cumberland Cos were joining neighbors. Reuben shows up in one record in Cumberland Co, KY in 1818. His brother Avery stays in KY, and is in records in Russell and Clinton, too, as they were formed. Hope I made myself clear on the two different Cumberland Cos. (^_^) Have you looked for any probate records for the two men who are "possible" fathers? Also, land records, if any heirs were entitled to any of the land, they would have to sign off before it could be sold. Have you used the "search" function on the Yates GenForum to see if anyone else is working on Crawford or Barren Co? Happy Hunting, Joan Rambo From: KINKATCHER@aol.com ; sent: Thursday, October 06, 2011 10:18 AM ; Subject: Re: Crawford Co Indiana Yates's; Well, if you mean am I still working on my Yates line, the answer is yes. The only connection I have with Indiana is the daughter of my Rueben Yates was born about 1832 "somewhere" in IN. Rueben seemed to move around quite a bit. Once I learned from another researcher he was a shoe and saddle maker, it made sense. In the early days most people probably owned one or maybe two pairs of shoes and one saddle. So, when the market ran out he moved on, looking for others who need his services. He came from Randolph Co, NC to Cumberland Co, KY, where my ancestor John was born 1815. Following the birth location of his children, he next went to MO, IN, back to MO and ended up in AR. Joan
