His age would match John, son of James and Mary Crider Froman. She has his pension file which is really a widow's pension as he died of wounds received in the War. The 60 year old woman in the household is interesting: Margaret Holloway or Calloway? Very hard to read. Perhaps the wife's mother.

Subject: Solution to John Froman, Kansas soldier

Ron, Just to complete this saga of the Kansas Civil War soldier, John Froman, I located him this morning in the context of his family. In the 1860 Census of Jackson Co., Mo (where Kansas City is located) I found the household of Thomas and Nancy (Froman) Martin. On 11 Sept 1847 Nancy Froman, proven daughter of James and Mary (Crider) Froman, married Thomas Martin in Crawford Co Indiana.

They obviously migrated to Jackson Co Mo as their household in 1860 includes the two youngest children of James Froman (who died 1860, I believe): John Froman (the census taker misspelled the surname "Foreman"), age 19, and Dorinda , age 17. We know from a family record that James and Mary Crider Froman's son John was born 1 Sept 1840 and the youngest child, Dorinda Froman, was born 24 Sept 1842.

Then, in a neighboring county, Lykins (changed name to Miami Co), in the township of Marysville, John Froman married Sarah Jane Roland/Rollin/Rolen (some question on surname) on 26 April 1862. As you provided me the 1865 census, you know that in 1865 he and his wife were in Atchison Co Ks and he was a soldier in the 10th Regt, Kansas Infantry. From a later orphan's pension application we know he died in 1868 of various diseases, mostly consumption. He only left one son, John W. Froman, born ca 1866. Apparently Robert (in the 1865 census) died young. But John W. Froman apparently had several sons and the name Froman survives in that branch to this day.

Without your clue provided in the 1865 census it would have been much more difficult to locate this information and help the descendant who has worked for many years trying to identify John Froman's parentage.
      Happy New Year,
      Gary Young
