JOSEPH J. YATES, farmer, P. O. Stamping Ground, is a native of Shelby County, Ky,. and son of Franklin T. and Louisa (Mitchell) Yates.
Franklin T. Yates was born in Scott County, in 1805; during his life worked at his trade of tailor. He died Nov. 4, 1878.
Joseph, his father and grandfather of our subject, was born in Washington County, Md., July 16, 1763, and emigrated to Woodford County, Ky., in about 1790.
Louisa, the mother of our subject, is a native of Shelby County, Ky., and the daughter of
Livingston Mitchell, who was also a native of Kentucky. She was born in 1815, and now resides in Ray County, Mo. Of the eight children born to them is Joseph J., our subject, who was born No. 4, 1843, at Shelbyville.
He attended the common schools of Scott County, where he received his education, and at the age of nineteen removed to Missouri, where he remained until January, 1872, when he returned to Scott County, where he has since remained engaged in agricultural pursuits.
In Ray County, Mo. on Oct. 7, 1869, he married Miss Oniska Spurlock who was born in Ray County. Her mother, Mary (Bates) Spurlock, was born in Hart County, in 1822, and died July 30, 1855. Mr. Yates and his wife are members of the Baptist Church. They are the parents of four children, three of whom are now living, viz: George, born Nov. 29, 1872; Ella, born July 26, 1876; and Walter, born Aug. 27, 1880.
Mr. Yates has accumulated a good property and is now the owner of 224 acres of improved land. He is a man of liberal views, but of strict honesty and integrity in all business transactions, and having the confidence of the people who know him.
