      Bessie Blanche Roberson, daughter of Henry C. & Sarah J. Landiss Roberson, was born at Grantsburg on May 27, 1881 and departed this life January 30, 1926 at the age of 44 years, 8 months and 3 days, a English, In. She was one of five people killed, when the vehicle in which she was a passenger was struck at a railroad crossing in downtown English as they were leaving town following attending a movie theater there.

      At about 10:10 p.m. on January 30, 1926, a Ford sedan, being driven by Rudolph Parker, 41, of Grantsburg, attempted crossing the tracks and v/as hit broadsided by a fast freight train. The car contained Mr. Parker, his wife, Artie, 31, and their daughter, Eunice Parker, 7, who were all killed and another daughter, Lura Francis Parker, 14, who was injured but survived the accident. Miss Bessie Roberson, who died about 20 minutes later enroute to the hospital in English, from massive head injuries, her nephew. Bethel Roberson, 7, who was the first taken to the hospital, he survived from his injuries, also killed in the car was Mrs. Lucille Ferguson Lone, 21, of Grantsburg, she died 20 minutes after arrival to the hospital.

      Mr. Lone's brother, Kenneth Ferguson, 16, was also in the car but survived his injuries. The freight train, which was long and had been traveling at a high rate of speed to gather momentum for the steep grade west of English, stopped as soon as possible.

      Early in life Miss Roberson joined the Presbyterian Church at Grantsburg and remained a faithful member until her death. She was a loving sister, daughter and friend. She left to mourn their lost her parents, two brothers, Charles and Alfred Roberson, both of Grantsburg; one niece, Margueritte 8ennett, of English; two nephews, Charles and Bethel Roberson, of Grantsburg; two aunts, Mrs. Minnie Longest, of Paoli, and Mrs. Kansas Cuzzort, of English; one uncle, Stephen Roberson, of Alford, I.; and host of relatives and friends.

      Funeral services for Miss. Roberson were conducted by Rev. Patterson, of the English Presbyterian Church and burial was in the Grantsburg Cemetery. [Courtsey of Jon Combs 7/01/2013.]
