Although 3rd platoon's corpsman I had the honor of knowing the "Sarge". First into the mine field that got him and Scotty, his radioman, I couldn't believe he'd be my casualty. He was indestructible, on his 3rd tour, with four kids back in the world. He'd taught us how to stay alive and his mere presence gave us confidence that we too would make it. As I held him we didn't share any words but true to his character his look said it all. We held each others' gaze as he slipped away - brave to the end. I'll always remember you “Sarge”. Thanks for who you were and all you taught us. Posted by: Jeff Haines; Email: Relationship: Tuesday, August 12, 2003

Sgt McCall was a character! He was squared away and intense as a Marine. He was kind to me as one of his platoon corpsman. It is a ritual to "pin" on promotional stripes and I had the honor of Sgt Mac pinning my E5 stripes on in the summer of 1968. His little twist on the thing was he pinned mine on by using the gun barrel of a .45 cal. pistol to do the pinning. I can feel the pain even today! His attitude about doing things right was very impressive. I think of him often. Gerald, the husband of Audrey E. McCall and the father of Deborah A., Kevin D., and Gerald A. McCall Jr. SSgt Mc Call was a Marine Corps veteran of over ten years of service. He arrived in Vietnam on January 19, 1968 and was assigned for duty with Company H, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF. In mid-June, the 2d Battalion was assigned to the SLF and his unit was re-designated Company H, BLT 2/7, 9th MAB.

During Operation EAGER YANKEE, on a search and destroy sweep in the vicinity of the Thon Xuan Tien Thuong Village complex in Vinh Loc District Thua Tien Province the Marines were fired upon by hostile small arms fire resulting in the death of SSgt McCall.

      * SSgt McCall was presented with the Silver Star Medal posthumously "For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action ....on 13 July 1968...."
