Mt. Hope Church Cemetery in Battletown, KY; Find A Grave Memorial# 12340669
This Methodist church was erected in the 1950s. The cemetery has graves dating back to early 1800s. As of 12/2005, 118 of the stones were readable and transcribed by Ron Yates and Lisa Hardin. About 40 graves were only marked with a field stone. Located in Meade County on Route 1047 just off of Route 228. It is in Big Bend, almost 17 miles on the left once you turn onto Route 228 from Route 448. This cemetery is important to those interested in Meade County, KY and Crawford County, IN history. The Big Bend of the Ohio River was accessible by boat and travel was common between this area and Leavenworth, IN. Our oral family history reflects that day trips from Leavenworth over to Big Bend for picnics and recreation was something to look forward to.
Those list members interested in Yates & Roberson families know that both of these families migrated in the early 1800's from Barren County, KY eventually to Crawford County, IN. Two Roberson brothers married Barren County, KY Yates sisters. Daniel and Esther Roberson paused or lived in Meade County at some point in this migration as their youngest child, Samuel was born in 1821 and Daniel died and was reported as being buried in the Mt. Hope Cemetery. Daniel's widow, Esther and Benjamin & Sarah Roberson and children concluded their migration to Crawford County. The pieces are still being pieced together but it would appear that Daniel's family primarily resided in the English, IN area and Benjamin & Sarah Yates Roberson resided in the Grantsburg, IN area. All corrections and any additions that can be offered to this understanding is highly desired.
Mt. Hope is a very pleasant cemetery to visit and has very old as well as 2005 internments. The stories told by the headstones are classic and reflect the hardships of life. One monument was erected by the friends of someone murdered nearby. Clayton McMichen is also buried at Mt. Hope. Clayton McMichen became one of the most successful and respected fiddlers to gain experience and exposure at the Georgia Old-Time Fiddlers' Conventions, held in Atlanta from 1913 to 1935. McMichen was born on January 26, 1900, at Allatoona, in Cobb County. He died in Battletown, Kentucky, on January 3, 1970.
