B. J. Peterson, 87, Marion, died at 12:23 a.m. Monday in Colonial Oaks Health Care Center.
He was born in Indianapolis, to the late Henry and Opal Vida (Casort) Peterson. He had been a resident of Marion since 1983 and formerly lived in Van Buren.
He married Gariselda “Gari” E. (Pefley) Cummings on November 25, 1983. Pete and Gari observed 25 years of marriage on Nov. 25, 2008.
He lived a courageous twelve and half years with Chronic Inflammatory Demylinating Polyneu
ropathy and endured a final one month battle with a rare type of Lymphoma, Angioimmunoblastic T-Cell Lymphoma.
B.J. was a 1939 graduate of Muncie Burris High School and graduated from Ball State in 1947. He coached basketball, track and baseball at Van Buren High School from 1947 to 1953. He retired as a Corporate Training and Safety Manager from Bell Packaging Corp in March of 1990 with 37 years of service.
He was a US WWII Army Veteran, serving in the European Theater and received the Bronze Star. He was a member of the Reserve Officers Association USA, the Van Buren American Legion and a former United Way board member. He was an enthusiastic Purdue fan and an avid golfer, making a hole-in-one at Walnut Creek Golf Course.
Survivors include his wife, Gariselda “Gari” E. Peterson, Marion; daughters, Nancy Margaret Peterson, Palo Alto, Calif., Sara Catherine (Stephen) Smith, Fairmount, Barbara (Robert Kiersztyn) Peterson, Muncie; stepdaughter, Eileen (Travis) LeMaster, Sweetser; sons, William Reed (Cheryl) Peterson, Fishers, David Scott (Ruthann) Peterson, Bearcreek, N.C.; stepson, Curtis (fiancé, Michele) Cummings, Indianapolis; grandchildren, Susan (Brad) Morgan, Catharine Ann (Marnell) White, Jennifer (Mark) Jones, Marsha (Aidan) O’Hare, Scott Peterson; great-grandchildren, Jacqui and Meagan Bagley, Matthew Morgan, Sara and Alex White, Chris, Mark and A.J. Jones, Allison and Sam O’Hare; step-great-grandchildren, Rachel and Megan Ashley, Kirstie, Justin, Lauren, and Elijah Cummings.
He is preceded in death by parents, Henry and Opal Peterson.
Services and burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
