  • Notes
    • LAWSON YATES (William1) was born 30 April 1795, according to the death records of Taylor County, West Virginia, which state he died 30 August 1885, age 90 years, 4 months, 1 day, son of Win and Nancy Yates, born in Virginia, information by R. F. Cooper, nephew* He married Eliza Cooper, daughter of Thomas and Rebecca Cooper. She was born in Maryland and died 3 December 1879, age 77, according to the Taylor County death record, reported by her husband. They were listed in the 1830 census of Harrison County (eastern part) as 30-40 with 1 male under 5. This may have been a son, who did not live to maturity,or a relative, as Lawson's will, written in 1875 and probated in Taylor County 7 September 1885 mentions only a nephew Richard F. Cooper, who was to get all his land, 11.3 acres, live stock, etc., but v/as to pay to his sister, Mrs. Eliza Wiseman, wife of Eli, $175. Witnesses were James W. Burdett, Alfred Rector, Win Mo Rector, with J.W.Burdett and Richard Cooper, executors. The 1850 census of Taylor County lists Lawson Yates, farmer, 55; Eliza Yates 57; and Eliza Cooper 7. The I860 census, same county: Lawson Yates 62; Eliza Yates 51; Eliza Cooper 17. The 1880 census, same county, shows Lawson Yates, widower, 85, with rheumatism, born in Virginia, with his father and mother both born in Virginia, to have been living with Richard Cooper and wife Augus- ta, both 28* Of interest in this connection is the fact that several Cooper children were enumerated in the 1850 census of Taylor County living with other families: Charles W., 13, and Mary, 12, with Benjamin Bradley, 45, and wife Julia,43; Rebecca, 15, with Williamiah Bradley, 64, and Sarah, 41, with whom Elizabeth Leech, 97, also lived.
