Children of John Yates and Margaret Hawkins "Mrs. Vonda Gregory of Wendel, West Virginia, a descendent, wrote 3 March 1936 the following to the compiler of this family history: 'We have prepared a short memorandum of some of our ancestors for the benefit of ourselves and also for those younger. The first of our ancestors that we have any account of at present was John Yates -- born February 27, 1773. So far as is known at present, John Yates, two brothers and one sister came from an eastern state - probably Virginia - in what year is not known, and settled on a small stream by the name of Shelby, Taylor County, West Virginia, near Pruntytown. John Yates married Margaret Hawkins, March 10, 1803. It is not known positively if she came with him or not, but it is thought she did. John Yates died April 12, 1853, age 80 years, 1 month, 15 days. Margaret Yates died May 15, 1854, age 70 years. Their family consisted of five boys and four girls, namely: Martin Yates (1804-1883), Nelson Yates, Isaac Yates, Elijah Yates, Lawson Yates, Elizabeth Yates, Nancy Yates, Sarepta Yates, Mary Jane Yates. The family after marriage settled in Taylor County near the old home place except one. Nelson left home in his young days and was never heard from again. The old home is still owned by the Tutt family grandchildren'."
