Andrew Jackson Yates was the son of Valentine and Susannah Yates.Cornelius Carroll provided much of this information.Andrew (AJ) Jackson Yates (brother of James Yates) was born son of Valentine and Susannah Yates, September 10, 1829 in Tennessee and died February 24, 1894 at the head of Sammy Clark Branch, Honaker, and Floyd County, Kentucky. Matilda was the daughter of Booker Mullins r. and Polly Johnson. She was born in 1836 in Kentucky and died February 14, 1923 in Kentucky. Andrew Jackson Yates was appointed surveyor in 1880 and served as Justice of Peace in precinct no 5 for eight years, 1879-1887. He seceded as Justice of the Peace to John G. Howell, the son of David Howell Jr. in 1887. The log house “AJ” and Matilda lived in at the back of the Race Bottom, above the mouth of Spurlock, Left Beaver, was washed away in a flood in the 1860’s. Matilda was living with her daughter, Margaret when she died. Andrew is buried at Harold, Floyd County, Kentucky. Matilda is buried at the mouth of Cow Pen, Pike County Kentucky.

Andrew Jackson Yates: born 10 Sep 1829-died 24 Feb 1894. I had 1884 for his death date but changed it when Amos Carroll found his grave stone with the new date on it. The stone appears to be correct. This is the life summary I have on my data: Lived early marriage life with Matilda in a log house on back side of Race Bottom, Left Beaver Creek, Floyd Co, KY; served in KY Home Guard (normally Union side)during civil war; made his living there by making gun stocks for rifles and other wood working items; home destroyed by Beaver Creek flood; moved to Big Mud Creek above Tolars Creek, near Branhams Creek-opposite side of valley on hill side in log cabin; worked as wood smith, black smith, justice of peace (precinct 5, 1879-1887, succeded by John Howell in 1887) and as county surveror. His burial place was just down the hill side from the remains of his final home, in the Yates-Martin Cemetary. AJ, his brother Luke and sister Charlotte always claimed to have been born in Hawkins Co, TN. All of their births were filed in Gate City, Scott Co, VA, on the TN border so they may have been correct-it was common then to wait until someone had to go to the nearest town to file vital statistics and Gate City was the only town in the area at the time. A little story on AJ; He would never allow a picture to be taken of himself during his lifetime. When his remains were being removed from the Martin-Yates Cemetary the state genealogists (Amos and Corneilus Carroll) had 2 digital and one regular cameras in the party and each was tried when the grave was opened-all 3 failed to work so AJ's dislike of pictures semed to continue, even 112 years after his death.
