      Dr William Archibald Lockett Birth: Jun. 1, 1838 Wayne County Kentucky, USA Death: Jun. 11, 1934 McEwen Humphreys County Tennessee, USA Son of Lemuel Lockett 1805-1841, born in Henderson, Henderson County Kentucky and died in Wayne County, Kentucky, and Margaret Ann "Peggy" Woods 1811-1893, from Wayne County Kentucky. Middle child of five children, and the first of two sons. He had three sisters. Named for his father's father, Rev. William Lockett 1782-1853, and his mother's father, Archibald Woods 1780-????. He was in medical school when the Civil War started and in 1864 he enlisted as a doctor in Company L, 1st Kentucky United States Cavalry. He entered service as a Sergeant, then 1st Lieutenant and finally Captain. His obituary below indicates he finished medical school in 1866 after the Civil War. Married Mary Crittenden Yates 1841-1905 on April 10, 1867 in Glasgow, Barron County, Kentucky. They had eight children, six sons and two daughters. Mary died in Mesa County, Colorado. Dr. Lockett practiced medicine for several years in Saguache, Colorado. I am very grateful for the kind assistance of Find-A-Grave contributor "A Jones Girl" for sending me the obituary that follows: ------------------------ Wayne County Outlook Monticello, Kentucky 21 Jun 1934 Dr. W.A. Lockett died at his home in McEwen, Tenn., Monday morning after a lingering illness at the age of ninety-six years. Dr. Lockett was born in Wayne County, Kentucky, June 1, 1838. He was married to Miss Martha Crittenden Yates of Barren County in 1867. Of this union eight children were born. He is survived by four sons and one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Patterson, with whom he made his home. Dr. Lockett was a Methodist, Mason and Eastern Star. Dr. Lockett served in the Civil War in Col. Woolford's 1st Regiment of Kentucky Volunteers. After a year in the services he was sent home with the advice that be would soon die of tuberculosis. He graduated in 1866 from the Louisville Medical College and practiced medicine in Hart, Barren and Metcalfe counties. Dr. Lockett had many friends and relatives in these counties. He frequently visited his niece, Mrs. Leona Freeman in Horse Cave. Mr. and Mrs. Patton, Miss Freeman and Mrs. A.O. Franklin attended the funeral services and burial in McEwin yesterday afternoon at 1:30. - The Hart Co. Herald Dr. Lockett was a cousin of Mrs. T.G. Harrison, deceased, his father, Lemuel Lockett, who is buried on the Ishmael Daugherty farm, being a brother of Mrs. Harrison's mother, Matilda Lockett, who married Rev. Lewis Parker. The Lockett family came to Wayne County from Virginia in the early part of the last century.
