19 Aug 1894 Family history as told: Grandpa Ott fell in love with his 2nd wife's (Elizabeth Roberts) daughter by a previous marriage, she become pregnant but refused to marry him. He killed her and then himself.

The Springdale, Arkansas News dated August 24, 1894 reads:

It now becomes our painful duty to note one of the most serious tragedies that ever occurred in this community. It is the killing on Sunday the 19th of Miss Elizabeth Craig by one Dr Ott. The doctor after shooting and slaying the poor helpless woman then turned the deadly weapon upon himself and fired. The first shot entering his bowels on the right side low down. But the second shot penetrated his heart and of course he fell a corpse in his tracks. The young lady received but one shot which entered her back below the right shoulder, passing almost through the body. If she could have died instantly, as was the case with her cruel slayer, she might have been relieved of a vast amount of suffering and pain. But such was not the case as she lingered until Tuesday morning the 21st and death came to her relief. Cause of killing as well as your correspondent has been able to gather is as follows: Dr. Ott had been separated from his wife and children a few years and had become infatuated with Miss Elizabeth and on the day of the fatal affair had called to see her and she refused to talk to him which we suppose angered him and he left the house but in a short time returned when the tragedy occurred. Miss Eliza was a daughter of a well known and respectable family, her father once filling the office of Justice of the Peace and a prominent blacksmith, living near Ladds Mill in this vicinity

[Dr. Anderson Ott had first been a painter and then run a notion wagon and was studying medicine until the Civil War. On 29 Oct.1862 he enlisted in Co. K, 23rd Indiana Infantry Volunteers for three years. He was discharged for a bad heart on 19 Feb 1863. His discharge shows Pvt. Anderson Ott, of Cpt. Windle's Company, of the 38th Regt. After the war he set up a practice in Mifflin IN in 1870 and was there until he moved to Newton Co. AR in 1878. He was there until 1881 at which time he moved to Benton Co. AR where he remained until 1885 and at that time he moved to Washington Co. AR.

He studied medicine under Joel Vandever at Mount Prospect, IN and was a student at the medical college in Louisville. His first wife had lived only 10 months after their marriage. He married a cousin of his first wife and that is how they got back to Mifflin.

In Washington County Arkansas, Dr. Ott had not lived with his second wife for some time and was in love with Miss Lizzie Craig. On a Sunday afternoon in August 1894, he shot her with a gun, stating that she had gone back on him and he did not want to live without her. She died the next Tuesday and Dr. Ott committed suicide. He left a note for Mr. John Craig, the father of the murdered girl, to take his horse and cart and sell it and pay for the funeral of both and bury them close together.

His wife Mary Elizabeth (Jacobs) Ware Ott, applied for a military pension. J. A. Farley, Justice of Peace, acting as coroner, stated that Dr. Ott came to his death on the evening of 19 Aug 1894 by two self-inflicted gun shots of a 38 caliber Smith and Wesson revolver.

Above information taken from a book on Prominent Area Residents at the Public Library in Fayetteville Arkansas and from photo copies of Articles in the Fayetteville AR Democrat and the Benton Co. AR Democrat. If Dr. Ott came to Arkansas in 1878, all of his children including Leoria, would have been born in Indiana. Don Ott, Subject: Dr. Anderson Ott son of Malachi Ott, Sat, 30 Nov 2002]
