2/8/2012: PROGRESS NOTE FROM A FELLOW RESEARCHER:

      Hi Ron-

Benjamin Yates (1745-1849) is a complicated fellow. My email is probably just as complicated and too long. Sorry!

My family tree was created years ago and stopped at John Yates (1819 -?). He lived in Adams County Ohio - the place where Benjamin Yates died. We always thought there was a connection but we had no direct proof.

Benjamin Yates (1745-1849) was a revolutionary war soldier. He was an indian spy on the Pennsylvannia frontier and was wounded at the battle of Yorktown. His father is Samuel Yates (1703-1773) and mother is Johanna Gould (1708-1788). That family line is well documented on ancestry.com.

It's taken a long time for me to figure out how and if Benjamin Yates' fits into my family tree. I'm still trying to verify things. I ordered a record of his pension request and it had a transcription of where he lived and how he served.

I found census records that placed him at the right places at the right time. As you know early census records only list the name of the head of household and the number of people in the household rather than every individual.

While in Crawford Pennsylvania in 1810, Benjamin Yates was in a household of 4 - himself, a wife and a male and female child. In 1820, Benjamin Yates is in Adams County, Ohio in a household of 4 with a son between 16-25 and a daughter between 10-15. In 1830, Benjamin Yates is in Lewis County Kentucky (directly across the Ohio river from Adams County)in a 2 person household - himself and a wife. The immediate nieghbor on the 1830 Census is William Yates who happens to be exactly the right age of the son in the 1810-1820 census. William Yates is most likely the father of John Yates (1819-?).

In 1835 Benjamin Yates married Sarah Robinson in Highland County Ohio (county just above Adams). My assumption is that Benjamin Yates' first wife must have died. I got the name Mary Ford as his first wife from other family trees posted to Ancestry.com but I cannot verify it.

As for William Yates - in 1840, he is living in Adams County Ohio with a family of 11. The record lists Wiliam's age as 90, but on closer inspection it's clear that the 90 year old male is not William. I think it's Benjamin Yates.

In 1849, Benjamin Yates dies at the age of 104.

In 1850, William Yates is living in Adams County in the household of Elizabeth Savage (I believe this is his daughter). The immediate nieghbor on the census is John Yates - my for sure G-G-Grandfather. I think it's very likely that the connections I've found are true.

So - from other ancestry trees - I know that Benjamin Yates'(1745-1849) siblings went South into Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky.

Maybe one of those lines has an answer? good luck!
