    The Stepro Family
A Letter From Albany Oregon Tells About Thirteen "Steprow" Children
    Many in This County Interested

Ira E. Stepro, of Heth township, has sent us a letter from his relative, Frances Helmich Hill, of Albany, Oregon, which will interest the members of a very large family in this county, the Stepro family and their relatives, hence, although a part of it may not be of general interest, we are giving it space.
Sometime ago we published a clipping from an Oregon newspaper about the big time at the celebration of the one hundredth birthday anniversary of Mrs. Sarah Helmick, July 4, who left Heth township ninety years ago, when she was ten years old. The letter will tell the rest.
    138 E. 7th St
    Albany, Oregon
    December 4, 1923
    Mr. Ira Stepro
    Mauckport, Ind.
    Dear cousin Ira;
Of course we are cousins of some degree but just what that degree may be would undoubtedly keep a lawyer out of mischief for a while in figuring it out.
There is no doubt in my mind that your people are relatives of mine. Grandma says she is sure your grandfather is her nephew since Jefferson Stepro was her oldest brother. He was married twice and his first wife died leaving a little girl named Sarah who was raised by grandma's mother. After grandma's father died (while living at Mauckport) her Moher moved to Iowa and took Jefferson Steprow's little girl with her. She raised the child as her own and grandma remembers her perfectly.
When grandma made a visit to Iowa about thirty-years ago she visited Jefferson's daughter who was married at that time and had two children. She does not remember her nieces' husband's name, but they lived in Davis County, Iowa, on a farm. This Sarah Stepro must have been your grand-father's half-sister.
I will give you an outline of the family as grandma has given it to me.
Her father's name was Peter Steprow (We spell it Steprow out here in the West.) He was a cooper, by trade and made hundreds of barrels, tubs, etc., to freight apples and other produce down the Ohio river.
Her mother's name was Catherine Shuck Steprow. They were married in Kentucky but moved to Indiana not long afterward, settling near or in Mauckport. They had a very large family consisting of the following children:
1 Jefferson - the eldest, who married Margaret Jones, she died leaving a baby girl who was raised by its grand-mother. Jefferson's second wife was Susan Overton.
    2. Mahalia Stepro married Walker Overton , a brother of Susan's. He was killed while serving as deputy sheriff in an attempt to make an arrest. They had two little girls and lived near Mauckport.
    3. William Stepro left home when young and grandma lost trace of him.
    4. Mariah Stepro married Richard Curl and lived near Mauckport. They had three children. She lived to be quite old. We have a picture of her when she must have been past 100 years old.
    5. Nathan Stepro died young of scarlet fever.
    6. John Stepro went to St. Louis, took yellow fever and died.
    7. Henry Stepro - grandma knows nothing of this brother.
    8. Sarah Stepro married Henry Helmich in spring of 1845. Left Iowa for Oregon the day after wedding day and grew up with the state. Had five children, two of whom are living. Henry Helmich died in 1877. Sarah moved to Albany in 1878 and has lived there since. She has six grand-children and seven great grandchildren living.
    9. Catherine Stepro married Jesse Fresh. Had a very large family several of whom are dead. After the death of her husband Catherine moved to Oregon where she lived for a number of years. Several of her children lived in Oregon at different times and her oldest son died on the Pacific Coast. The family finally all moved East and Catherine went with her children. She died three years ago last September aged about 93.
    10. Harvey Stepro came to Oregon in about 1847. Married Sarah Kayes. They had large family. Several are dead. A number are living in Oregon. Harvey died in 1912 aged 85. His wife died two or three years ago.
    11. Mary Jane Stepro married and moved away from home. All trace of her or her family lost.
    12. Matilda Stepro died when a young woman of poisoning from a rattle snake bite.
    13. Elizabeth Stepro died when very young. She was older than Henry.
If you or any of your family can add any information concerning any of this family we would be very glad to have it. Grandma is always glad to learn anything about any of her family and would appreciate any facts that she can get.
There are a number of young people in the family here in Oregon. You may like to write to some of them. Rose and Sarah Steprow are granddaughters of Harvey Stepro. This address is Carvalls, Oregon. Their father, Lee Steprow lives in Alsea, Oregon.
Majorie Tedrow is a great granddaughter of Sarah Helmick. Her address is Carvallis, 342 9th St. Grandma was much interested in your letter as were all the family and we will always be glad to hear from you. At some future time I will tell you more about your Oregon cousins if you care to know more about us.
I am sending you a few Kodak pictures that I have taken or have had taken.
Wishing you and your family good health and prosperity I, remain,
    Your kinswoman
    Frances Helmick Hill

This article is out of a newspaper without a date or which newspaper noted. There were two papers in Corydon, The Corydon Democrat and The Corydon Republican.

Peter Stepro, legend has it, was born in Prussia. At age 15, rather then be drafted into the army, he left home and made his way to England, then to Ireland. Peter married an Irish girl somewhere. He brought her to Washington Co. , Ky. Here she died. She left two children: Jefferson and Mahala Stepro. Peter then married Catherine Shuck in 1811 in Washington Co. , Ky. Marriage on record in that County. They soon left Ky. to go to Harrison Co. , Ind. At the ( 1835 ) time of Phillips death he had been in Ind. for 19 years, proven by a deposition made 1834 at the April 15 session of the Harrison Co. , Ind. Circuit Court, where he made oath for pension as a Revolutionary soldier. His pension # is 31958. The reason stating this is that Catherine and Peter were surely not far behind, if any, when Phillip made his move. If Mariah, our grandmother, was born in Ky. it was pretty close to moving day. Peter no doubt coined the name Stepro, Steeproe. Steprow. We have found it once in Pa. and Peter was in front of it. Our family history started right there in old Pa. most probably. He stepped off the ferry at Mauckport and told them he was Peter Steepro. Peter died at Mauchport, Ind. Date of birth varies from 1786-1890

Peter married Catherine Shuck on 23 May 1811 in Washington, Kentucky, and was divorced in 1843 in Harrison, Indiana. Catherine (daughter of Johann Philipp Shuck, Sr. and Sarah Ann Schooling) was born in 1792 in Berks, Pennsylvania; died on 20 Mar 1858 in Davis, Iowa; was buried in Atwood Baptist Cemetery, West Grove, Davis, Iowa. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
