    moved to Oregon in 1852

4/20/2002 Hi, I am responding to your post on Genforum. My history is as follows; My 5G grandfather was John Blakeney of PA. He had three sons if Grace Glaspie is correct in most of her work in, "The Blakeney Kith and Kin", located in the IL Gen. & Historical Soc., in Vermilion County, IL. She has some things messed up in her book but I have learned that my 4G grandfather's name was Hugh Blakeney that married Ann Williams in Bourbon Co. KY., 11/Jan/1819.

She relates in her work, that William Blakeney married Ann Williams. Since I have a letter writen by Hugh and Ann's grandchild, that his grandfather's name was Hugh, I think that I believe him. Anyway, Hugh had a son named John Williams Blakeney that moved to Oregon in 1852. This John was my g.g.g. grandfather. He married Nancy Agnes Phelps daughter of Jonathan Phelps and Sarah (Sally) Gowen. If you would like any further info, please contact me at Raeburg@aol.com Judi Humburg - McKinley

Conclusion: the above census 1820, 1830 and 1840 all fit the family known in the Glaspie/Swank works as William and Ann Williams Blakeney. First and middle name transposition was and is not uncommon. Son James was probably born in 1819 [not 1820] and daughter Martha were probably born 1820 [not 1821].

"The next record we found was the census of 1790 in Allegheny-Washington Co., Penn. John had two sons under sixteen years and his Wife, Martha. The family left Northumberland Co., Penn, and moved to Kentucky. In the tax list of 1800 we find in Harrison Co., Ky., where the south fork of Licking flows from Bourbon Co. In the tax list of 1807 he was in Bourbon Co. and had three horses. In 1809, Martha Blakeney had three horses and three colts; by this we surmise that John had died and she was the widow."
