Andrew Smith Laswell was born in 1808 in Cumberland County, Kentucky, and is buried in Union Chapel Cemetery near Grantsburg, Indiana. It appears that Andrew Laswell died mysteriously and was buried in the old part of Union Chapel Cemetery near Grantsburg, Indiana. At that time, the cemetery was known as "Yates Chapel Cemetery." Since there were no headstones erected and only flagstone was used to mark the grave, no one presently knows where the grave is located in the Cemetery.

In June 2013, Ron Yates and Elmer Leon Laswell (Andy) visited in the Union Chapel Yates Cemetery. Andy confirmed that his father and his grandfather both certified that Andrew Smith Laswell was found in an isolated location in a field, dead with a shotgun next to him. He was then buried in an unmarked grave at the Yates Family Graveyard aka Union Chapel Yates Cemetery after 1889. Andrew Smith Laswell is the common ancestor grandfather of both Ron Yates and Andy Laswell. 6/8/2013 by Ron Yates

Andrew married Mary E. (Polly) Crews, about 1836. She was born in 1817 in Monroe County, Kentucky. Andrew was a farmer. After the death of Andrew, Mary E. (Polly) Crews Laswell married Russel King on 23 May 1864 in Crawford County, Indiana. Russel King was born about 1814. Mary was known to her grandchildren as "Granny King." She also went by the name of "Polly."

[December 09, 2014 1:48 PM To: Ron Yates Subject: Our John Laswell and Dicey Smith Hi Ron: When reviewing your tree online I noticed that for our John Laswell who married Dicey Smith you had an exact date of birth 23 Oct 1760. I would be very interested in where that date came from. I have always shown him as born 1770 for the following reason. 1810 Census 26-44 (1766-1784). 1820 Census Bef 1775. 1830 Census 1770 -1780. 1840 Census 1760 - 1770. These are census records that are known to be him. He is 15 years Dicey Smith's senior even then and would be 25 years her senior if born in 1760. -- Regards, Jack]

Welcome to the website for the Cameron Parish Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. We are located in Reston, Virginia, 20 miles west of our nation's capital. Our chapter is part of District V of the Virginia State DAR.

Our chapter was formed in 1979, the chapter name being derived from the church parish that once straddled both Fairfax and Loudoun County lines in the northern tip of Virginia. We are proud that this area was home to many patriots who fought for and supported the causes of American independence. Our chapter is comprised of over 100 members of diverse ages and talents residing in both counties.

When John Laswell left Virginia he settled in the Sartain District, along Marrowbone Creek, in Cumberland County, Kentucky, in an area that later became Metcalfe County, Kentucky. This is where the majority of the records for this John Laswell are to be found.

The formation of Kentucky in the portion of the state where John Laswell lived was as follows: Virginia County, Kentucky - Lincoln County, Kentucky in 1780 - Green County, Kentucky in 1792 - Cumberland County, Kentucky in 1798 - Metcalfe County, Kentucky in 1860. This area covers where Monroe and Metcalfe Counties border. This is where Dicey Smith Laswell lived after John's death and where John Ahart Laswell lived later.

Andrew Smith Laswell, another son, lived in adjoining Monroe County, which was formed in 1820 from Barren and Cumberland Counties. Moses Laswell, another son, lived in Barren County, formed in 1798 from Green and Warren Counties.

You will note that in the 1820 census John is picked up in Monroe County instead of Cumberland County.

In the 1850 Cumberland County, Kentucky Census, John had died and Dicey Laswell was the Head of Household. P. A. Welch, a 15 year old female, was living with her. This was probably Elizabeth (Betsy) Laswell's and Jo Welch's daughter, and Dicey's granddaughter.

From: Jack A Laswell Sr ; Sent: Tuesday, December 20, 2011 4:45 PM; To: Ron Yates; Subject: Re: Proposed Change: John Laswell (I384); Hi Ron: When I wrote the note the other day I would have said Hi but I didn't realize it was your site. It came up with the heading obscured. In any case 4 April 1824 is the correct date for John Ahart Laswell. I was speaking of his Father John Laswell that married Dicey Smith who you have as born in 1765 I believe he was born in 1770 and here is why.

John Laswell - born Abt 1770 Loudoun County, Virginia; died 1840 -1841 in Cumberland County, Kentucky. Married: 11 July 1798 Mercer County, Kentucky; Dicey Smith - born Abt 1780 ,, Virginia; died 1851-1852 Cumberland Co., Kentucky.

Census Dates for Birth for John Laswell who Married Dicey Smith {Dicey is shown in many formats in records to include (Dizey, Daisy, Dianna)} {Laswell is also found as (Lacefield, Lacewell, Lazewell and Saswell) in the records for this John and Dicey.} Since the original spelling in England appears to have been Laswell; Lasswell in the original Settlers and my line uses Laswell, I will use Laswell for John, Dicey and Children. (It is recognized that others may choose to use a different variation of the name.)

    1810 - - 1765-1784; 1820 - - bef 1775; 1830 - - 1770-1780 DOB - - Abt. 1770 (This date also fits well with Moses Laswell's other known Children. Moses being the son of Jacob Lasswell) 1840 - - 1760-1770

Note below John shows up in the 1787 Virginia Tax List of Franklin County. He would be 17 at this time but could easily have passed himself off as 21 since he was in a new area. He and probably his family or part of it had left Loudoun County.

(Source: letter to Jack Laswell; 2010) Mr. Laswell -I am the volunteer researcher with the Fairfax Virginia Room. I've been working on a college project that encompasses the Laswell family in regards to the Carolina Road. I was googling the Laswells' and came upon a letter you sent to Ron Yates that was put on a website - I think his.

In noticed that you do not have proof that Moses Laswell born approx 1737/1738 is the son of Jacob. I wanted to offer definitive proof. -While researching a neighboring property I came across Moses Laswell's deposition in a land suit. The deposition was taken on March 1773 and it states that "Moses Laswell aged thirty five years or there abouts". Also, the deposition states his father is Jacob Laswell. At that time his father was "infirm" and unable to come to court or to the land survey, if not brought by carriage. The land suit is regards to Jacob Laswell destroying/cutting down the beginning tree of his neighbor, then Michael Reagan. The Lasswells are not the Plaintiff or the Defendant, but it is the action of Jacob Laswell in regards to that tree that centers around the court case. Through the depositions a small glimpse of life in that area is shown. The case is at least 100 pages long. Evidently Jacob had a small cabin near a glade next to that tree. What the cabin was for is not said. Only that most neighbors mentioned that it was old in 1770s. I'm happy to share any information I find. Kathe Gunther

Marriage to Rebecca Beecraft taken from: Church Records, Maryland Marriages, 1634 - 1777, by Robert Barnes (1975). Parish records of All Hallows Parish in Arundel County, Maryland.

Anne Arundel County, Maryland, 1 AA = All Hallows Parish; copy made in 1888 by Lucy H. Harrison at MHS. Page 107 - Jacob Lasewell, married Rebecca Beecraft on 29 Oct. 1724, - 1 AA-332

Jacob Lasswell was married in about 1730 to Elizabeth Slater, a widow, thought to be the widow of George Slater, living nearby. Jacob Lasswell died before 1770.

The significance of the record found in Fairfax County (Virginia) Deed Book D. -83- PP. 236 - 238 - is that we now know that Jacob had at least four sons. There is no evidence of daughters.

The Elliott report concluded that Jacob Lasswell had only one stepson "Edward Slater (Heater)" and all of the later Laswells/Lasswell were the children of John Lasswell, 1698, and Margaret Lee. We now know that both John Lasswell, who married Margaret Lee, and Jacob Lasswell, who married Rebecca Beecraft and then the widow Elizabeth Slater, had Children.

Jacob appears to have had a stepson, Edward Slater, as indicated by a land transaction between Jacob and Edward in 1731. It states : Jacob Lasswell, of Hamilton Parish, Prince William County, Planter "For the love good will and affection which I have and do bear unto Edward Slater of the same Parish and County, 140 acres of land upon Goose Greek.

We also know from the findings of Patrick Mark Lasswell that Jacob was married twice (This was not known in the Elliott Report.) He first married Rebecca Beecraft on 29 October 1724 and was then married to the widow Elizabeth Slater (Sleater) by 1731.

We do not know when Rebecca died, or if she had any children. We now know that a John Lasswell was Jacob's second son, and that Andrew Lasswell was Jacob's fourth son. We can assume that Andrew's mother was Elizabeth, assuming the first child would more than likely been born in 1725; the second in 1727; the third in 1729; and the fourth in 1731. This is not always true, but is a reasonable presumption.

We also know that the first four sons were born before 1756 when the lease was recorded, and probably before 1755 when it was allegedly written.
