Mt. Hope Church Cemetery in Battletown, KY; Find A Grave Memorial# 12340669

This Methodist church was erected in the 1950s. The cemetery has graves dating back to early 1800s. As of 12/2005, 118 of the stones were readable and transcribed by Ron Yates and Lisa Hardin. About 40 graves were only marked with a field stone. Located in Meade County on Route 1047 just off of Route 228. It is in Big Bend, almost 17 miles on the left once you turn onto Route 228 from Route 448. This cemetery is important to those interested in Meade County, KY and Crawford County, IN history. The Big Bend of the Ohio River was accessible by boat and travel was common between this area and Leavenworth, IN. Our oral family history reflects that day trips from Leavenworth over to Big Bend for picnics and recreation was something to look forward to.

Those list members interested in Yates & Roberson families know that both of these families migrated in the early 1800's from Barren County, KY eventually to Crawford County, IN. Two Roberson brothers married Barren County, KY Yates sisters. Daniel and Esther Roberson paused or lived in Meade County at some point in this migration as their youngest child, Samuel was born in 1821 and Daniel died and was reported as being buried in the Mt. Hope Cemetery. Daniel's widow, Esther and Benjamin & Sarah Roberson and children concluded their migration to Crawford County. The pieces are still being pieced together but it would appear that Daniel's family primarily resided in the English, IN area and Benjamin & Sarah Yates Roberson resided in the Grantsburg, IN area. All corrections and any additions that can be offered to this understanding is highly desired.

Mt. Hope is a very pleasant cemetery to visit and has very old as well as 2005 internments. The stories told by the headstones are classic and reflect the hardships of life. One monument was erected by the friends of someone murdered nearby. Clayton McMichen is also buried at Mt. Hope. Clayton McMichen became one of the most successful and respected fiddlers to gain experience and exposure at the Georgia Old-Time Fiddlers' Conventions, held in Atlanta from 1913 to 1935. McMichen was born on January 26, 1900, at Allatoona, in Cobb County. He died in Battletown, Kentucky, on January 3, 1970.

The 1st child of John Yates, his son Robert Yates has been noted as being born in Barren Co., Kentucky in 1783. Barren Co., in 1785 was still a County in Virginia as Kentucky Statehood was in 1792. It has seemed odd that one child would be born in Barren in 1783 then Esther born in 1785 back in Cecil Co., MD. John Yates, Jr. is noted as being born in Kentucky in 1790.

  8. 15.  Mary Watson was born in 1775; died in Oct 1835 in Knox, Illinois.

    Notes:

note: I did not mention it in the previous email, but you are also missing another daughter of James Froman (b. 1798), which is Mary W Froman. Before the discovery of Mary Watson, many had Mary W Froman as Mary Watson Froman (name after her grandmother).

Mary Watson was married to Jacob Froman Jr. (son of Jacob Froman Sr), she died in Knox County, Illinois in Oct 1835. Her husband, Jacob Froman Jr died in Warren County, IL in 1846

    1. We know that Lydia Watson's claim in Fayette County, PA was adjacent (West) to Paul Froman Sr' claim is called "Froman's Pleasure" and that Lydia's son James Watson's claim was adjacent (South). Below them in Maryland was Jacob Froman Sr's claim called "Bad is the Best of It" (Garrett County, MD), which he held onto up 1816.

    2. After Jacob Froman Sr's father's death in 1783, Jacob Froman Sr transfers/sold his father's claim called "Froman's Pleasure" to Arthur Watson "Sr" on 8 Sep 1788. (Mary's father). Husband of Lydia Watson

    3. Arthur Watson dies on 6 Mar 1792 his will which is probated in Fayette County, PA, mentions daughters Mary, Nancy, Hanny (Hannah), sons John, Benjamin, Arthur, and James, and wife Lydia (who dies in 1804).

4 On 20 Jul 1805 Nathaniel Cochran marries Nancy Watson in Bullitt County, KY, "Consent in person by Jacob Froman Junr (the bondsman), who has the care of Nancy Watson, being her relation". Nancy had come to live with her older sister after the death of their mother.

    5. Nancy Watson and her husband Nathaniel Cochran, move to Crawford County, Indiana with Jacob Froman Jr and his wife Mary (nee Watson), and they live near each other.

    6. Benjamin Watson and his wife Sarah Cochran (Nathaniel's sister), married 22 Jun 1805 Bullitt County, KY, he moves near Jacob Froman Sr. Jacob Froman Sr sells land to Benjamin Watson on 9 Feb 1811 and 5 Mar 1811. On 3 Nov 1825 Jacob Froman's Sr son Elijah Froman sell land to Benjamin Watson (by power of attorney of his mother Barbara, who is listed as a widow).

    7. A descendant of James Watson, younger brother of Mary Watson, is a DNA match of 16cM (5th to 8th cousins). James Watson stayed in Fayette County Pennsylvania, as did his descendants. I find no other family ties to this descendant's family line except the Watson. "Froman's Pleasure" passed from Arthur Watson, to his son James Watson and I find "Froman's Pleasure" still owned by James Watson's grandson until 1 Sep 1870, when it is finally sold
