A very important deed written in 1755 provides insight into Jacob Lasswell's offspring. VA Deed Book C: pages 236-238.

"On margin. '2d May 1763 Dd Wm. Whitely per note' Indenture 16 October 1755 between ROBERT CARTER of Westmoreland County and JACOB LASSWELL..In consideration of rents..farm let..182 acres being in Parish of Cameron in the county of Fairfax being part of 11,000 acres called Goose Creek tract..Corner to Steven LEE.. Corner to GOLDEN..during the natural lives of Elizabeth Lasswell, wife John Lasswell second son and Andrew LASSWELL fourth son..paying yearly rent of Three £..
Presence of : s/ Robert Carter
    W.WEST, s/ Jacob Lasswell
    Jas. LANE,
    Joseph POWERS
    Lease recorded 20th APR 1756"

This deed proves that Jacob had AT LEAST four sons. It is not known if Edward Sleater was counted as one of them or if there were other sons not involved in the transaction. We do not know if Jacob had any daughters, and we do not know which wife was the mother of his offspring. What we do know is that Jacob Lasswell had FOUR SONS; that the second son was John Lasswell and the fourth son was Andrew Lasswell. That leaves the question "Who were the first and third sons of Jacob Lasswell". From census records it is quite clear that Moses Lasswell was one of the sons.

That would leave Elias and William Lasswell, Sr., to account for in early Virginia history. I have seen and lost a record where Jacob stated his brother Isaac's wife Jane went to North Carolina with their child soon after Isaac's death. I personally believe that child was William Lasswell born abt 1719 in Ann Arundel County, Maryland and became the Patriarch of all of the North Carolina branch of the Lasswell/Laswell family.

Based on the following Record it is assumed that this Andrew Lasswell (Rev. War.) was the fourth son of Jacob Lasswell of Virginia:

Fairfax County (Virginia) Deed Book D. -83-PP. 236 - 238; On Margin. "2d May 1763 Dd Wm. Whitely per note" Indenture 16th October 1755 Between Robert Carter of Westmoreland County and Jacob Lasswell .. in consideration of rents..farm let..182 acres being in parish of Cameron in county of Fairfax being part of 11,000 acres called Goose Creek Tract.. corner to Stephen Lee..Corner to Golden.. during natural lives of Elizabeth Lasswell, wife, John Lasswell second son and Andrew Lasswell fourth son .. paying yearly rent of Three pounds..Presence of Jas. Lane,Robert Carter; Henry X Tayler, Thomas Squires; Jacob Lasswell; Lease Recorded 20th April 1756

We can assume that Andrews mother was Elizabeth because the first child would normally have been born in 1725, the second in 1727, the third in 1729 and the fourth in 1731 had Rebecca been the mother. This is not always true but is a reasonably accurate presumption.

On the home front, no Red Coat ever marched down the Ashby's Gap Road, and the only American soldiers the area ever saw were some raggle-taggle contingents walking between Winchester and Alexandria. Nearly all of the eighty - or - so white males in Levin POWELL's taxation district (from about Macville north and west to Goose Creek) were in the militia, and some enlisted. Not until May, 1780, did the Commonwealth order a draft, setting the county's quota at 117. Interpolating from the county's population, six of those 17 would have come from Levin POWELL's district.

Families of those off to war were given food by the gentry, who were reimbursed by the county court. From the Middleburg area there was only one such case. In mid-December, 1778 the county court ordered 'Levin POWELL to furnish Andrew LASSWELL with Necessaries.' ..."

Marriage to Rebecca Beecraft taken from: Church Records, Maryland Marriages, 1634 - 1777, by Robert Barnes (1975). Parish records of All Hallows Parish in Arundel County, Maryland.

Anne Arundel County, Maryland, 1 AA = All Hallows Parish; copy made in 1888 by Lucy H. Harrison at MHS. Page 107 - Jacob Lasewell, married Rebecca Beecraft on 29 Oct. 1724, - 1 AA-332

Jacob Lasswell was married in about 1730 to Elizabeth Slater, a widow, thought to be the widow of George Slater, living nearby. Jacob Lasswell died before 1770.

The significance of the record found in Fairfax County (Virginia) Deed Book D. -83- PP. 236 - 238 - is that we now know that Jacob had at least four sons. There is no evidence of daughters.

The Elliott report concluded that Jacob Lasswell had only one stepson "Edward Slater (Heater)" and all of the later Laswells/Lasswell were the children of John Lasswell, 1698, and Margaret Lee. We now know that both John Lasswell, who married Margaret Lee, and Jacob Lasswell, who married Rebecca Beecraft and then the widow Elizabeth Slater, had Children.

Jacob appears to have had a stepson, Edward Slater, as indicated by a land transaction between Jacob and Edward in 1731. It states : Jacob Lasswell, of Hamilton Parish, Prince William County, Planter "For the love good will and affection which I have and do bear unto Edward Slater of the same Parish and County, 140 acres of land upon Goose Greek.

We also know from the findings of Patrick Mark Lasswell that Jacob was married twice (This was not known in the Elliott Report.) He first married Rebecca Beecraft on 29 October 1724 and was then married to the widow Elizabeth Slater (Sleater) by 1731.

We do not know when Rebecca died, or if she had any children. We now know that a John Lasswell was Jacob's second son, and that Andrew Lasswell was Jacob's fourth son. We can assume that Andrew's mother was Elizabeth, assuming the first child would more than likely been born in 1725; the second in 1727; the third in 1729; and the fourth in 1731. This is not always true, but is a reasonable presumption.

We also know that the first four sons were born before 1756 when the lease was recorded, and probably before 1755 when it was allegedly written.
